Art of Conversation: 6 weeks from Awkward to Articulate
A unique and comprehensive program for developing the mindset, boundaries, and practical skills needed to feel confident in any social situation
(without freezing up, feeling embarrassed, or sticking your foot in your mouth)
Before I tell you all about this life-changing program, let's talk about who it's really for...
You’re a person who desires to feel confident, compassionate, and capable of handling any conversation that comes your way. You know that there must be a way to learn the conversation skills that have always alluded you, you just haven't found it yet. You are ready to step into the version of yourself that can connect well with anyone, no matter what.
- ...someone who has always identified as being shy or awkward and wants to finally break free of your anxiety around socializing
- ...a professional who feels confident presenting on your area of expertise, but frustrated that you keep coming up short on personal topics, and you suspect that it's limiting your success
- ...looking to improve your communication skills to better connect with others AND to better express your wants, needs, and desires so that you can feel understood, respected, and balanced
You're in the right place, and I'm going to tell you exactly how the Art of Conversation course will give you the tools, inspiration, and support you need on your journey to create the most polished and capable version of yourself!
By the end of this program,
you will be able to…
Feel confident about the way you present yourselfNever worry again about how you come across to others. You will know exactly how to speak, hold yourself, and choose the right words to sound elevated and professional in any setting.
Walk into any situation knowing you can small talk & socialize like a proAwkward silences and stories that fall flat? Never again! You will learn how to ask questions the right way to get better responses, how to share about yourself without oversharing, what to do when you make a comment you wish you hadn't, and how to leave a great impression on everyone. Networking events, holiday parties, and meeting your partner's family for the first time? Bring it on!
Gracefully avoid topics that make you uncomfortableWish you could get away from tricky topics like religion, money, and politics? I've got you covered! Learn how to avoid these conversations in the first place (where possible) and how to wrap them up quickly and move on when others are being insistent.
Manage the overwhelm (fight or flight) that can happen in tense situationsYou will be able to recognize the specific symptoms that come on when you are stressed and emotional during conflict, and will have a game plan for exactly how to calm yourself back down in the moment so you can stay composed no matter what.
Respond to conflict or upsetting situations effectively and peacefullyDo tense situations seem to get the best of you? Your emotions run high and your words often get away from you? Or maybe you freeze up because you don't know what to say, but spend the rest of the day thinking of what you "should" have said once it's all over? After this course, you will have a clear plan for how to handle difficult situations effectively, without your emotions getting the better of you.
Handle difficult colleagues and work situations while keeping your reputation spotlessWork life can be tough, especially when you are dealing with a host of difficult colleagues and managers who are testing your patience (and your sanity) at every turn. Perhaps the difficulty is more related to a club or organization that you belong to, but the trouble remains. You will learn how to gracefully handle a wide range of tricky personalities and situations to set your day up for ease and success.
Express your needs, feelings, and desires with ease in a way that makes others want to cooperate with youMany people handle extreme emotions in one of two ways: losing their cool or shutting down. Neither of these approaches will help you get what you really want, which is to have your needs met and to feel connected to and supported by others. You will learn an incredibly successful technique for expressing your emotions and boundaries in a way that achieves the outcomes you truly desire.
Connect with those who are overwhelmed, hurting, or grieving without worrying about saying the wrong thingIt can be SO overwhelming to come face to face with someone else's pain or anxiety. The fear of saying the wrong thing will often cause people to say nothing at all to avoid embarrassing themselves or making the other person feel worse. The approach you will learn in this course gives you all the tools you need to offer support, encouragement, and connection with those you wish to comfort.
And so much more!
"Julie has a way of making clients feel at ease and excited about conversing with others, which I never thought was possible for an introvert like me. I always felt nervous about speaking in social situations because I never knew what to say, or when to interject, or how to end a conversation without seeming rude. Fortunately, Julie came to my rescue! Not only does she give you practical tools that you can implement in any social situation, but she lets you know why it works too, which I absolutely love! Working in higher education for over 10 years, I've met many people with degrees in Communications, and none have ever offered conversation techniques as helpful and relevant as Julie has."
- Alexis, TX, USA
Hi, I'm Julie!
I am a Social Skills Coach and author of the book, "Navigating & Avoiding Awkward Conversations." Throughout the last 15 years, I have cultivated a strong set of interpersonal skills as a result of working in major department stores, for a collections company, and as a physical therapist in the home health setting. I teach on a wide variety of topics, from basic socializing and small talk skills, to dealing with conflict, to having conversations on difficult subjects such as illness and grief. As a doctor of physical therapy and a board certified specialist in geriatrics, subjects related to healthcare, patient rights, and caregiver burden are close to my heart.
My mission is to empower others to feel confident in their ability to express themselves and their needs/desires more clearly, and to be able to handle difficult situations and conversations with ease. I believe that with a strong foundation of compassion, boundaries, and a healthy mindset, anyone can learn to gracefully connect with others, no matter the situation.
I can't wait to work with you!
What’s Inside "Art of Conversation: 6 weeks from Awkward to Articulate"
Every building needs a strong foundation, so that's what we're going to get started for you from Day 1. Before we can get into the details of handling so many different types of situations and topics of conversation, we need to go through a checklist of foundational concepts and skills that will set you up for success throughout the rest of the course.
We will start by assessing every detail of your presentation and approach. These are the things you will want to be aware of and address regarding the way you sound, your body language, and making a great first impression.
Next, we will learn to master a set of skills that will serve you in many common situations and make a great fall-back, no matter the topic. You will be able to implement these "emergency" tips any time you are unsure of what to say, or feel uncomfortable about a topic.
Finally, we will cover several words/phrases/situations that make many people uncomfortable, and how to handle them with ease.
We go over a lot of ground in the first module, but I want you to have practical skills you can put into use RIGHT AWAY so you can immediately start to feel more at ease and confident.
- Volume & speed
- Grammar & word choice
- Articulation & accent
- Eye contact, body language & facial expressions
- Basic principles, tips, and tricks
- Avoiding discomfort with touchy topics
- Complainers, compliments, comparisons
- And much more!
Small Talk Success
Let's jump right in! Small talk is something that comes up frequently for many people. Whether at the grocery store, a networking event, meeting friends of friends, or a holiday/family get together. If you work with the public, it might be something you face all day every day!
Despite how frequently small talk opportunities occur, many people are incredibly uncomfortable when they do. What do I share? Do people really want to hear this? Do I sound ridiculous? What do I do if I make an awkward comment or tell a story that doesn't go over well?
Not to worry, Friend, I have you covered on ALL fronts! By the end of this Module, you will know exactly what to say, what to avoid saying, and how to ask better questions (and give better answers!) to keep the conversation ball rolling.
You will know how to handle a situation that becomes uncomfortable or awkward in such a way that puts you, and those around you, at ease. You will be able to walk into any room knowing that you can speak to anyone there. Once you learn these concepts and rules of engagement, you will have a skill that will serve you for the rest of your life!
- Best practices for introductions
- How to ask great questions and give engaging answers
- What/how much to tell about yourself
- Topics that are off-limits
- Dodging questions that you don't want to answer
- Working a room/moving on
- Dealing with uncomfortable situations
- Catching up with others (sharing without oversharing)
The Big 3: Money, Religion, & Politics
These are the topics you were likely told growing up to avoid in conversation. As much as conventional wisdom says to keep the peace by staying away from these topics, you might still find yourself having to deal with them more than you would like.
Don't worry! The purpose of this Module is to help you get away from these topics gracefully. You will learn my top tips and scripts for declining to join these conversations, and how to easily step away from them when someone tries to persist. You will learn how to balance keeping the conversation neutral with leaving it completely.
In a practical sense, money matters come up frequently in our daily lives. Whether you want to learn how to feel confident shopping, dining, or voicing a money-related concern, it will be covered in detail in this Module.
- Politics - How to avoid the topic
- Politics - When others want to insist on bringing it up
- Religion - How to keep your beliefs private (if you prefer)
- Religion - How to hold space for differing beliefs
- Attending novel religious events without feeling uncomfortable
- Money - Privacy when it comes to dollars and cents
- Money - How to feel comfortable in new situations (retail, restaurants, charity, etc)
- Correcting charges & when things you've paid for don't live up to expectations
Dealing with Conflict
Conflict is something we all wish we could avoid. Wouldn't it be wonderful if it just never came up? Unfortunately, conflict arises whether we want it to or not.
Since we can't avoid it, let's learn how to deal with it! I have tons of experience with difficult situations and upset people between my 15 years in retail, collections, and healthcare, and now YOU can learn everything I do when faced with conflict. I will explain in clear detail all of my best tips and scripts for handling stressful moments with ease.
We will address dealing with conflict from every angle: practical tips for staying calm in the heat of the moment, how to balance being understanding with keeping strong boundaries, and the #1 KEY to approaching tense moments in a way that calms everything down instead of allowing it to escalate.
- Approach: tone, body language, word choice
- Fight or flight: what it is and how to calm it
- When others are yelling or being aggressive
- When others are being condescending or passive aggressive
- Handling invasive/inappropriate comments
- Standing up for others effectively
Personal advocacy and difficult relationships
Most of the previous topics apply to meeting new people who are approaching YOU and interactions that happen largely in isolation. Although they come up very frequently, it's a new person and situation every time.
We need to look more closely at people who are recurring figures in our lives and what to do when WE are the ones who need to approach someone else.
How to best respond to irritating coworkers? How to handle the person behind the desk who is being less than helpful? How to keep customers/clients/patients from running over you?
All of these answers are in this Module, as well as some resources and insider tips related to protected information and privacy laws. I want you to feel more confident in situations where you want access to your own information but don't know how to go about it.
- Difficult colleagues & other tense group situations
- Working with the public
- Boundaries in a business setting
- Healthcare & HIPPA for everyone (what you need to know and how to get what you need)
- Minding your reputation
Connecting with Those Who are Hurting
As a healthcare worker, helping others understand how to connect with those who are hurting is incredibly important to me. When this is handled poorly it results in more stress, hurt feelings, and isolation. When handled well, both people feel peace, connection, and support/community.
I know it can be stressful when you aren't sure what to say in these situations. I am here to guide to you every step of the way as you learn how to handle these topics with ease. We cover multiple specific diseases, stressed patients, caregivers, loved ones, and grief.
As the final piece of the Course puzzle, we will cover how to approach others when you need to express difficult emotions. You might have concerns about how to communicate overwhelm to a spouse, how to approach a friend who has hurt your feelings, how to draw a boundary with overbearing or uninvolved parents, etc. We will cover all of it in this final Module.
- Caregivers who are overwhelmed
- Disability do's and don'ts
- Illnesses: cancer, Alzheimer's, and others
- Comforting those who are grieving
- Helping others to open up
- Expressing difficult emotions
- When you have to bring up a grievance with someone
